215 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BERGEN, C. Neil WWII Neil was born in Altona, Manitoba, the son of Jacob and Mary Bergen. He married Angele De Backer on September 30, 1944 and they had three daughters, Elizabeth, Donna and Valerie. Neil enlisted at Winnipeg and trained at Petawawa and #2 CARU and served overseas in Belgium, Holland and Germany. While in Baldur he was principal of the school from 1951 to 1955. He also worked as viceprincipal at R.D. Parker Collegiate. BILES, Bertram William “Bert” WWI Bertram was born in Hamworthy, Dorset, England, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Biles. He enlisted in Winnipeg in 1915 and served with the 45th Battalion overseas. Later, he joined a Corps of Stretcher Bearers in France. There he was wounded and suffered badly from shell shock. He was thus returned to England and on to Canada in 1917 when he was discharged as medically unfit. He obtained employment with the Postal Department in Winnipeg but succumbed to the flu in 1918. Bert came to Canada to the farm of Bill Christopherson in the early 1900’s. BILES, Fred D. WWI Fred was born in Hamworthy, Dorset, England, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Biles. He served in France as an observer with the Royal Air Corps following enlistment in England. In 1920, he married Bess Meech and they had two children, Audrey and Freda. Fred came from England in the early 1900’s to the farm of the late Bill Christopherson. When war broke out, he went to enlist but was turned down. Being a very patriotic man, he immediately booked passage to England and re-enlisted there. Fred is now deceased. BJORNSON, Edward WWI Edward was born on October 6, 1891 in the RM of Argyle, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Bjornson. They moved to Wynyard, Saskatchewan where Edward enlisted on March 29, 1916 with the 223rd Battalion. In September 1917, he was sent to France and participated in the battles at Arras, Canal du Nord, Cambrai and Passchendaele. On signing the Armistice, he was sent to Germany. He returned to Canada and to his home in Wynyard in May 1919. In September 1942, Edward drowned while fishing in Lake Winnipeg. BRADFORD, Wendell WWII Wendell was born in Belmont, Manitoba, the son of Tom and May Bradford. On July 27, 1948 he married Ada Davidson. They had two children, Patricia and Brenda. Wendell enlisted at Winnipeg and trained at Esquimalt and Comox, BC. He served overseas on combined operations – Landing Craft, HMCS Mimic, a Corvette HMS Nabob, aircraft carriers. They were torpedoed on HMS Nabob in August 1944. After the war, he resided at Ninette and was employed as a salesman by Investor Syndicate. BRIDGE, Frank Howard WWI Frank was born in Carman, Manitoba on March 22, 1897, the son of Frank and Martha (McCullough) Bridge. He enlisted in Carman on January 13, 1916 with the 222nd Battalion, trained at Camp Hughes and left for overseas on November 1, 1916. He arrived in France on December 27, 1916 with the 44th Battalion, a Private Runner C. Co., Clerk. He was recommended for commission on August 22, 1916 and appointed Lieutenant at Bexhill-on-Sea, Officers Training School. He participated at Vimy Ridge, Lens, The Triangle, Arras, Hill 70, Passchendaele and Amiens. He returned to Canada and was discharged on February 6, 1919. On June 16, 1920 he married Ethel Miller. They had two sons, Douglas E. and Donald B. Frank had been an active Legionnaire, Past President of Carman Legion Branch 18, past member of Baldur Legion Branch 108, and Honourary Life Member of Branch 56, Deer Lodge, Winnipeg. Frank was manager of the Royal Bank of Canada, Baldur during the thirties and forties. BRINKWORTH, Merle PEACETIME Merle was born in Baldur, Manitoba in 1932, the son of Jack and Gertrude Brinkworth. On July 13, 1955 he married Marlene Sterling. They had a daughter, Donna, and two sons, Murray and Kenneth. He enlisted in Brandon on July 25, 1951 and trained at St. Jean and Aylmer, Ontario. He was stationed at Greenwood, NS; Hamilton, ON; Seven Islands, QC and Sudbury, ON and overseas with the 3rd Fighter Wing at Zweibrücken, Germany. Merle has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Baldur. We Will Remember
