199 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WILKINSON, Thomas Donald WWII Donald was born to George and Lillian Wilkinson on December 9, 1918 in Brandon, Manitoba. He enlisted in 1942 with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and then on March 30, 1942 in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highland Regiment. He married Christina Jean Finnie on April 4, 1942. Donald left on September 21, 1942 and trained overseas with the 2nd Division as a Rifleman. He landed in France on July 8, 1944. Private Thomas Donald Wilkinson lost his life on August 8, 1944 near Caen between Ifs and Fontenay-le Marmion in action as a sniper. He was buried initially at Cintheaux, Basse-Normandie and then reburied in 1946 at the Canadian War Cemetery at Bretteville-sur-Laize in Cintheaux, France in Grave 13, Row G, Plot 6. A lake in northern Manitoba was named Wilkinson Lake in his honour. His medals include the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. WILLIAMS, William WWI William was born on February 11, 1891 in Wolverhampton, England and farmed in the Bagot, Manitoba area. He served with the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada before the war. William enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg on December 6, 1915. He was a Private with the 179th Battalion training at Camp Hughes in Manitoba by June 1916, later serving with the 43rd Cameron Highlanders.William sailed from Halifax on October 4, 1916 on the SS Saxonia, landing in Liverpool, England on October 13. He was sent to France on November 14, 1916.William received a severe gunshot wound to the right groin (femur) on April 17, 1917 at Vimy. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal on October 18, 1917 and April 14, 1918. William left Liverpool on March 12, 1919 on the RMS Baltic. William passed away in Vancouver, BC on October 18, 1974. WISENDEN, William Lewis WWI William was born in London, England on July 22, 1890 and farmed in the Beaver, Manitoba area. He served with the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada before the war. William enlisted in Winnipeg on November 16, 1915 with the 179th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders of Canada. He was transferred to the 43rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry, Manitoba Regiment as a Private. William left Halifax on October 4, 1916 on the SS Saxonia arriving in England on October 13. He arrived in France on November 14, 1916.William was reported as dangerously wounded from a gunshot wound to the head.William died of his wounds on May 28, 1917. He was awarded the Memorial Cross posthumously. William is buried at Noeuxles-Mines Communal Cemetery in France.
