In 1934, the family moved to Minitonas, MB. He received his schooling in Minitonas and graduated grade 12 in Strathclair, MB. James enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in January 1945 in Winnipeg and served in Shilo. After his discharge in November 1945, he returned to the family farm. James joined the Minitonas Legion Branch 47, serving as President for many years, until the Minitonas Legion Branch dissolved and he joined the Swan River Legion Branch 39. He was a Legion member for a total of 44 years. FULFORD, Keith William WWII Keith was born on December 3, 1921 in Mather, MB to Christina and Alfred Fulford. In 1934 during dry years and depression, the family moved to a farm east of Minitonas in the Swan River Valley. He went to elementary school in Mather and Minitonas and high school in Oak River. In 1941-42, he got his teacher’s normal school in Winnipeg and in June 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, training in Winnipeg, Montreal and Dauphin as a radio wireless mechanic. In 1944, he was posted to England, France, Germany and Holland, and was discharged in September 1945. In 1995, he had the chance to visit Holland again during the 50th anniversary of their liberation. Keith was Treasurer of Minitonas Legion Branch 47 for 20 years. When they dissolved in 2001, he joined the Swan River Legion Branch 39 of which he has been a member for 44 years. GALLANT, Ernest Frank WWII Ernest was born in Oak Lake, MB in 1914. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on March 24, 1941. He trained in Listowel, ON and served with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse before being transferred to the Border Horse in 1943. He obtained the rank of Corporal in 1941 and Trooper in 1943. He served in England, Italy, United Kingdom, Continental Europe and Central Mediterranean. His awards include the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He was discharged on October 1, 1945 at the age of 35. He was a member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42 for over 45 years before he passed away in 1997. GALLANT, Eli M. WWII Eli joined the Royal Canadian Army on August 16, 1939 and served with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse. Trooper Gallant was a driver mechanic with the 5th Armoured Division. He was stationed in Winnipeg, MB, Borden and Listowel, ON and Debert, NS. He served in combat overseas in England, North Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Holland. His awards include the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-45 Star. Four of his brothers (Ernest, Francis, Omer and Wilfred) also served in the Royal Canadian Army, and all of them returned home safely in August 1945. Eli passed away in 1988.
