Military Service Recognition Book 62 The following is a brief history of the Maxwell family of Rossburn as it pertains to World War II. William and Euphemia Maxwell with their 8 children arrived in Rossburn from Scotland in 1927 to take up farming north - west of Rossburn. Three of those children were John, David and Robert. John, born in 1905, married Mabel Plante of Rossburn in 1932. He joined the army in 1941 and was stationed in Morrisburg and Kingston, ON, where he was a member of the Royal Canadian Engineers Corp. before retiring from the army in 1946. They moved to Brockville, ON where he was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96. John and Mabel had 5 children Beverly, John, Wayne, Bruce and Shirley. He died in 1978 and Mabel in 1988. David, born in 1920, also joined the army in 1941. He served overseas in England, France, Belgium, Germany, ltaly and Holland as a driver with the 65th Canadian Tank Transport Co. RCASC. While in England, he met and married Joyce Cowderoy in 1945, who was a member of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), 1942-1945. David returned home to the family farm in 1945, Joyce followed in 1946. They continued farming until 1966 when David started working for Parks Canada at Riding Mountain National Park. He retired in 1985 and they settled back in the Town of Rossburn. They had 2 children, Diane and Brian. Joyce died in 1993 and David in 2002. Robert, born in 1923, joined the army in 1941 and also served overseas in England, France, Belgium, Germany, ltaly and Holland as a driver with a Canadian Tank Transport Co. After the war was over in 1945, he returned to Manitoba. He married Edith Scott of Baldur, MB in 1948. ln 1950, Robert joined the Air Force. He was stationed in Calgary, Winnipeg and Ottawa where he retired in 1973. They had 3 children: Donna, Gary and Debbie. Robert died in 1998; Edith still resides in Calgary, AB.
