IN REMEMBRANCE of My Uncle ELMER CROSSLEY CAIRNS (July 20, 1925 – March 9, 2011) Elmer served in World War II in the navy as a radar operator on the destroyer "St. Laurent". The St. Laurent escorted merchant marine ships which supplied England with war materials. The St. Laurent was in the naval "OPERATION NEPTUNE" as a part of "OPERATION OVERLORD" on D-Day, June 6, 1944, when the Allied Armies from the U.S., Britain and Canada landed on the coast of Normandy. His job was to monitor for German submarines. I do believe that his ship located and destroyed a submarine that day. Uncle Elmer could not even swim and his family always wondered how he ended up in the Navy. THANK YOU UNCLE ELMER. WE MISS YOU.
