WWII Roman was born in Bluenose, Saskatchewan in 1923 and joined the Navy, serving in Canada, Newfoundland, Ireland and London. ZINK, Metro M. WWII Metro was born in the Rural Municipality of Silver Creek, Manitoba. He enlisted in Winnipeg on November 3, 1941 and was discharged there on March 10, 1945. He served as a Lance Bombardier with the 5th Field Royal Canadian Artillery in Canada, England and Europe. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star. Metro has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159. ZYWINA, Alexander A. “Alex” WWII Alex was born in 1923 in Lawrence, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Army on October 13, 1943 at District Depot #10 at Fort Garry, Winnipeg, then went overseas in May 1944. He was taken on as reinforcement with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, 3rd Division, Battalion #55 in June 1944. Eleven days later, he went into battle. Alex served in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany until he was wounded in the leg at Leopold Canal in Belgium. He spent his 21st birthday in hospital in Bruges, Belgium recovering from his injury and was later transferred to England. He was finally repatriated in May 1946. Alex was awarded the 193945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He was a member of Lawrence Legion Branch 87 for sixty-three years before he died in 2009. ZONDLO, Martha WWII Martha was born in 1922 in Moose Bay, Manitoba. During World War II, she joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps and took her basic training at Fort Garry Barracks, then went active in Winnipeg until her discharge. She moved to Flin Flon, where she met her husband and they resided there until their deaths. Martha passed away in 2008. They are both buried in The Legion Cemetery in Flin Flon. Martha was a member of Flin Flon Legion Branch 73.
