229 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WARD, Earl Kitchener WWII Earl was born in Roblin, Manitoba on July 30, 1916. He enlisted in the Army on January 2, 1941 and served with the 17th Battery, 15th Field Regiment in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was honourably discharged on December 15, 1945 and three years later, married Lorene Nastrom with whom he raised three children. Earl and Lorene were together for over 60 years. Earl received the 1939-45 War Medal, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Thank You Medal from the Dutch Government, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. His name is engraved on a kiosk at the Juno Beach Centre in France. Earl helped and served on the Trans Canada Trail, Senior Citizens Council, Historical Society, and the History Book Committee, as well as coached boys’ and girls’ ball teams and worked at The Legion Camp Peace Gardens for many years. He was a Life Member of Roblin Legion Branch 24 for fifty-eight years before he passed away on August 26, 2008. Earl is buried in the Roblin Cemetery. WARREN, Charles Edward WWII Charles enlisted for voluntary service in the Royal Canadian Signal Corps of the Canadian Army on July 20, 1942. He trained at Portage la Prairie where he was taught the basics like how to handle a gun, etc. Around November 1, 1942, he was transferred to Vimy Barracks in Kingston, Ontario, where the soldiers were obliged to live in tents with no floors, on the banks of the Great Lakes. The weather was wicked, windy, rainy, and snowy, resulting in Charles coming down with bronchitis, which he suffered from all his life. WATKINS, E. F. WWII E. F. Watkins enlisted in April 1937 in England and was discharged there in February 1948. He served with the Royal Tank Regiment and the Royal Army Pay Corps in England, Egypt and Palestine during WWII. Lieutenant Watkins was awarded the Africa Star. He has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159. WASSLEN, M. Alexander WWII Alexander was born in 1921 in Binscarth, Manitoba. He joined the Army and served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in Canada, England, Italy, Belgium, and Holland. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Alexander has been a member of Nutana Legion Branch 362 for more than sixty-six years.
