He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in England as a tail gunner on a Lancaster with Squadron 645. George was recognized in the 2005 History Channel film “Bomber Boys”, with his squadron. He died in 1989. STRACHAN, Leonard E. “Len” WWII Len was born in Devlin, Ontario in 1918. He joined the Royal Canadian Artillery and served as a Gunner in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during WWII. He was awarded the France and Germany Star, the 1939-45 Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Len was a member of Emo Legion Branch 99 from 1962-65 and member of a Manitoba branch from 1965-85, for a total of 23 years. He was also certified as having served from 1939-45 by the people of the Municipality of La Vallée, Ontario. Len passed away in 1985. STRATH, James “Jim” WWII Jim was born in 1921 in Souris, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in February 1943 and was stationed in Shilo, Manitoba. During a training exercise, he sustained a severe head injury from which he had severe seizures. Unable to meet military physical standards, he was discharged in July 1944 and spent many months between Deer Lodge Hospital and his home on the farm in Hayfield, Manitoba. Jim died in March 1950 at the age of 29. He is buried in Souris in the Glenwood Cemetery. STRATH, George Fraser “Geordie” WWII Geordie was born in 1919 in Rapid City, Manitoba. He served in the 5th Brigade and workshop of the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. After his discharge in January 1946, he worked at a variety of jobs until he joined the repair department of the C.P.R. in Carman Section, a department that closed a few years later. Geordie moved to Winnipeg, then used his V.L.A. credits to buy a half section of 18-8-20. In 1947, he married Doreen Moore, a nurse, and they had two girls. He sold the farm after several years of farming, started a carpentry business, but had to retire early due to poor health. He spent much of his time helping raise money for charity with Legion and B.P.O. Elks. Geordie was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for forty years before he died in Souris Hospital on October 3, 1988. He is buried in Souris in the Glenwood Cemetery.
