209 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca STERLING, Alvin B. WWII Alvin was born in Pilot Mound, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Army and served with the 6th Field Regiment, 2nd Division in Lewis, England and in France at the Falaise Gap and Dieppe during World War II. STEWART, Gordon WWII Gordon enlisted in October 1941 in Winnipeg and was discharged there in April 1946. He served as a Corporal with the Westminster Regiment in Canada, United Kingdom and Italy. Gordon has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159. STONE, Earl H. WWII Earl was born in Kenora, Ontario in 1924. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in November 1943 and served at HMCS Chippawa in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He spent time in Newfoundland and Montreal before going overseas to Europe in January 1944. His last postings were in Greenock, Scotland and Felixstowe, England and then Ostend, Belgium in 1944, when he was attached to a Motor Torpedo Boat Flotilla until the boats were destroyed by fire in the harbour. He was demobilized on April 10, 1946. Earl was a member of Earl Frost Legion Branch 133 for thirty years and passed away in 2007. STOLTZ, Eric William WWII Eric was born on September 26, 1920 in Big River, Saskatchewan after his parents immigrated to Canada from Sweden. The family eventually settled at Herb Lake, Manitoba. Eric joined the Army on February 16, 1943 and enlisted with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada in Winnipeg. He served in Canada, United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean Area, and Continental Europe. His medals and decorations include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, and the France and Germany Star. Upon demobilization, Eric was discharged in Winnipeg on December 4, 1945. After returning to Herb Lake, he married Betty Corman and they had one daughter. After his wife and daughter lost their lives tragically, he remarried. Most of the six children he raised with Mary Roberts still reside in Snow Lake, MB. Eric was a member of Snow Lake Legion Branch 241 before he passed away on March 19, 1985. He is buried in the Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg.
