He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with Fort Garry Horse in England, France, Normandy, and Holland during World War II. He was a member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42. George passed away in 1993. STAMM, Roy D. WWII Roy was born in Eriksdale, Manitoba in 1925. He farmed with his parents, Charles (a WWI veteran) and Agnes, until he enlisted with the Canadian Infantry Corps on October 14, 1943 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He left for overseas on October 5, 1944, disembarked in the United Kingdom on the 12th and was in northwest Europe on November 11. Roy was killed in action on February 16, 1945 while serving with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in Europe during the Victory Campaign. His remains were interred in Germany and later re-interred at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in Holland. Roy was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the War Medal 1939-45, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Stamm Lake (52L/11), east of Cole Lake, was named after him in 1982. STEPHENSON, Marshall F. “Mart” WWII Mart was born in Souris, Manitoba in 1918. He enlisted on February 10, 1942 and did his basic training in Portage la Prairie and Red Deer, Alberta. After going overseas to England on January 4, 1944, Lance Corporal Stephenson was sent to Italy on March 3, and to the second front on June 6, serving in France, Holland, and Germany. He spent two years overseas teaching driving to the recruits and serving in the Governor General’s Foot Guard before his discharge on February 21, 1946. Mart was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for fifty-three years before he passed away in Souris on June 28, 2008 at the age of 90. STEELE, A. B. WWII A. B. Steele enlisted in Winnipeg in December 1940 and was discharged there in October 1945. He served as a Bandsman in Canada at A3 Canadian Artillery Training Centre during WWII. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159.
