He enlisted in the Army in May 1915 and served with the 44th and 8th Battalions in France during WWI. A/Corporal Smellie was discharged in March 1918. He was a member of Russell Legion Branch 159 before he passed away in 1975. SMERECHYNSKI, Nick WWII Nick was born in 1924 in Medika, Manitoba. He enlisted in Winnipeg with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and trained at Fort William and Shilo before being sent to England and Avellino, Italy, where he finished training. He was on the front lines in France and Germany, then went to Belgium and Holland, where he stayed until the war ended. He signed up to fight in the Pacific but bombs were dropped on Japan shortly after and the war ended for good. After his discharge, Nick worked in the mining industry and was postmaster in Elma for 20 years. Nick and his wife Mary are enjoying life in Whitemouth. He has been a member of Lac du Bonnet and Beauséjour Legion Branches for 10 and 30 years, respectively. Nick was awarded the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Star of Italy, the War Medal 1939-45, the King Gorge VI, the Volunteer Star 1945 and the Star Clasp. STAMM, Charles A. WWI Charles was born in Thorold, Ontario on November 17, 1880. He was a farmer who was already 35 years old and married with one son when he enlisted with the 107th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces on February 1, 1916. He sailed from Halifax on SS Olympic on September 18, 1916 and arrived at Liverpool a week later. He disembarked at Boulogne, France on February 20, 1917. Private Stamm served only in France throughout the war. He received the Victory Medal and the British War Medal and was honourably discharged on May 8, 1918, returning home to his wife in Eriksdale, Manitoba. He continued farming and raised six more children and adopted two. Charles passed away in Carman on December 7, 1957 and is interred in Carman. STABBACK, Charles Thomas WWI Charles was born in Woodville, Ontario on April 3, 1885. He was a 31-year old lumberman living in The Pas, Manitoba when he enlisted on August 3, 1916 in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. He served for three years with the 45th Regiment Militia.
