203 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SIMS, Elven G. WWII Elven was born in 1912 in Pilot Mound, Manitoba. He joined the Governor General’s Foot Guard and was sent to England, where he married Janet Goodchild of Ramsgate, Kent. His wife was pregnant when he was killed in France on August 29, 1944. Their son was named Elven. Guardsman Sims is commemorated at Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France, and Sims Lake, southeast of Lac Brochet in Manitoba, is named after him. SLASHINSKY, Metro WWII Metro was born on November 11, 1920 in Sandy Lake, Manitoba. He had a basic Grade 8 education and quit school to help his father in agriculture. Metro joined the Canadian Army in 1940 and served as a Gunner in Newfoundland. Due to an injury while in service, he was discharged in 1945. Metro married Mary Buhay that same year and they raised three children. He was very involved in his community, volunteering in several organizations, including the school board, church, fire department, curling club, and Meals on Wheels. He was a dedicated member of Sandy Lake Legion Branch 184 for fifty-five years, never missing a Remembrance Day service. His involvement gained him a Life Membership and a Certificate of Merit. Metro passed away in 2001 and is buried in the Sandy Lake Cemetery. SMELLIE, Peter WWII Peter was born in Sifton, Manitoba in 1917. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served on HMCS Sherbrooke and HMCS Rivière-du-Loup on the High Seas during WWII. Peter died in 1988. SMELLIE, Albert George WWI Albert was born in Binscarth, Manitoba in 1892. He enlisted in Russell in December 1914 and was discharged in Winnipeg in May 1919. He served as a Captain in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, 32nd and 8th Battalions and the 18th Res. Battalion in England and France. Albert received the 1914-15 Star and the M.C. He was a member of Russell Legion Branch 159 before he passed away in 1974.
