199 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SHARPE, Gerald S. “Gerry” WWII Gerry was born on June 26, 1925 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. When he was an infant, the family moved to Pine Falls, where his father worked in the newly constructed paper mill. In May of 1943, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. After basic training, he was shipped out to serve in the North Atlantic Triangle Run on HMS Montgomery and HMCS Border Cities, protecting the shipping lanes of northern waters. After serving in Canada, England, and on the High Seas, he was discharged in October 1945. A second move to the United States in 1954 to work in a paper mill there became permanent. He has been a member of Pine Falls Legion Branch 64 for over nine years. SHARPE, William A. “Bill” WWII Bill was born in 1922 in Carman, Manitoba and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in December 1941. After basic training, he served as a machinist on various air force bases across Canada, including the base at McDonald, MB, Estevan, SK, and in BC at Cole Harbour and Jericho Beach. In April 1944, Bill was transferred to the Canadian Bomber Group at the Royal Canadian Air Force base at Middleton-St. George, Durham, England. While on furlough, Bill served as best man at his friend Clayton Farmer’s marriage to Margaret Bulmer. Clayton was from Pine Falls and had served with Bill at the McDonald air base. Bill was repatriated to Canada in June 1945 and later volunteered with his brother George for the Japanese War. They were posted to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia but the war ended before they could be deployed to the Pacific theatre. Bill has been a member of Pine Falls Legion Branch 64 for more than sixty-four years. SHEWFELT, Matthew Andrew “Andy” WWII Andy was born in Kingsley, MB in 1914. He joined the First Canadian Division, Third Medium Field Artillery during WWII and trained in Canada. He went to England by boat and served in Europe as a forward observer for the artillery. He was later recruited to serve out of uniform under General Montgomery in North Africa, and followed that by serving in uniform when they went to Italy. Andy was a member of Pilot Mound Legion Branch 62 before he passed away in 1996. SHAW, James C. “Jim” WWII Jim was born in 1915 in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army in 1940 and served with the #1 Motor Ambulance Convoy, which was attached to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps stationed in Winnipeg and Camp Shilo. Early in 1941, they left for England, where they were billeted for several years. After D-Day, the unit left for France. The #1 Motor Ambulance Convoy was among the first to land in the city of Catania, Sicily, but before leaving for Italy, they climbed and crawled up Mount Vesuvius. After Italy, Jim returned to England, where he joined the British Imperials at Aldershot and got his commission. He then served in France and Belgium until the end of the war. After France, his unit moved on to Nijmegen in Holland, where they remained until the end of October 1945. Jim returned home, got married, and raised a family on a dairy farm in Argyle, Manitoba. Jim belonged to Brant-Argyle Legion Branch 222 for thirty-seven years until he passed away in 1995.
