241 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WOOD, Harvey W. WWII Harvey was born on January 29, 1921 in Minto, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as an Aero Mechanic with the 1659 Conversion Unit in England at Topcliffe in Yorkshire. He served from June 16, 1942 to November 29, 1945, including overseas duty for nearly 2 ½ years. He married Audrey Barker on August 11, 1945 in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England. He farmed in Minto, Manitoba from 1946 until he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1963. He sold his farm in June 1964 and moved his wife and five children to Souris, Manitoba. In December 1978, he moved into Hillcrest Place Nursing Home due to his illness and passed away on November 18, 1996. Harvey was a member of Minto Legion 201 for fifty years. WOODFIELD, Frederick H. WWII Frederick was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1914. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve and served as a Petty Officer in Canada and on the High Seas on HMCS King’s College, Stadacona, Naden, Givenchy, Burrard, Discovery and Chippawa. While on HMCS King’s College in Halifax in 1942, Frederick convinced his superiors that the Royal Canadian Navy required messenger pigeons. He persuaded pigeon fanciers to donate the birds at no cost and by 1943, was in the Royal Canadian Navy Communications Branch and in charge of a West Coast loft providing pigeons for ships on Pacific Coast patrol duty. Frederick was a Life member of Brandon Legion Branch 3. He died in 1991. WRAY, David John WWII Dave was born in Cartwright, Manitoba in 1918. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and served with 115 Squadron in Patricia Bay and Vancouver Island, British Columbia; Guelph, Ontario; and at Annette Isle and Ketchikan, Alaska, USA. He was awarded several medals and discharged in April 1945. He returned to Cartwright where he bought the local bakery and later resold it in 1948. He then worked for the R.M. of Roblin until 1953 then went into partnership with two of his brothers in the construction and gravel business until 1970. He purchased the pool room in 1967, sold it in 1976 then worked for the Village of Cartwright until he retired and bought a few head of cattle as a hobby. Dave raised four children with his wife whom he had married on March 10, 1946. He was a member of CartwrightMather Legion Branch 86 for forty-five years before he passed away in 1990. WORSLEY, Frank W. SPECIAL DUTY AREA Frank was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1932. He joined the Army and served in Canada and Germany with the Royal Highland Regiment’s Black Watch, and with 1, 2, 3 and 4 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration, the Coronation Medal and the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal. Frank has been a member of several Legion Branches for a total of 29 years, namely Branch 1 in Winnipeg, Branch 92 in Waskada and Branch 3 in Brandon.
