WWII Elmer was born in 1919 on the family farm in the Riverview District of the Rural Municipality of Glenwood, Manitoba. He enlisted in April 1941 and after basic training, was sent to Pacific Command in Victoria, BC before being posted overseas in October 1943. Elmer served as a Storeman with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, #36 – 1st Canadian Army Troops, in Canada, England, France and Holland, where he was on VE Day. Elmer was a Lance Corporal when he returned to Canada in January 1946 and was discharged in Winnipeg in March. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He settled in Souris, trained as a Journeyman Electrician and operated Webster’s Electric. Elmer was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for more than thirty-five years and he passed away in 2008. WEIR, Ivan A. WWII Ivan, the only son of John and Mary Weir of Belmont, Manitoba, was born in 1921. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in May 1942 in Winnipeg. He trained at the Manning Depot in Brandon, then went to Regina for his I.T.S., Mossbank for his elementary and received his Air Bomber wings at Pearce, Alberta. He went overseas in April 1943 and was engaged in many air operations over Europe with 102 (RAF) Squadron. His crew was first class reserve. He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on April 22, 1944, reported missing on April 24 and was later presumed dead. He is commemorated at Svino Churchyard in Denmark. On his first operational trip, Ivan became a fully qualified member of the Caterpillar Club when he was forced to make his successful parachute jump. WHEELER, Elliot C. WWII Elliot was born in Croll, Manitoba in 1919. He joined the Army and was in training towards the end of the war, thereby only serving in Canada. Elliot was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for more than fifty years before he died in 2008. WHEATLEY, Lloyd M. WWII Lloyd was born on September 14, 1915 in Watrous, Saskatchewan. In April 1942, Lloyd enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, trained as an Air Gunner and sailed a year later to the UK, arriving in Bournemouth during an air attack. A month later, a number of airmen were posted to Stratford-upon-Avon where the crews were made up for operational postings. He flew Wellington and Whitley Bombers, then Halifax Bombers in his next posting before serving with 434 Squadron. On his fifth trip, he was shot down over Cologne, Germany and was a POW for 18 months at Mulberg on Elbe’s Dulag 4B. The Russian Army liberated the prison camp and after many delays, Lloyd headed on foot to the American lines, forty kilometres away. On May 17, 1945, he flew to England, returned to Canada around June 20, married Mytle Gohn on July 23, and was discharged on September 21. Lloyd was a member of General Lipsett Legion Branch 99 for twenty years.
