He joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in England, Holland and Italy. He was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for thirty-five years. John died in 1986. ULLBERG, Elden Ivar WWII Elden was born in Erickson, Manitoba in 1922. He enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg in 1943 and trained at Portage la Prairie before leaving for overseas from Halifax. Elden served with the 2nd Division of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Elden and his brother, Esril, didn’t see each other during the war but they re-connected when they returned home to Erickson. Ed came back in the spring of 1946, married Elizabeth Bates from Dauphin in 1950, and raised 3 children. Elden still owns the family farm in Erickson but resides in Winnipeg. UPWARD, Richard Frank WWII Richard was born in the Rural Municipality of North Norfolk, Manitoba in 1922. He joined the Army at Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg on May 3, 1941 and served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in Canada, England and Europe. After completing his training, he sailed to Farnborough, England and then went to Sicily on July 13, 1943. Three weeks later, his truck caught fire and he ended up in a field hospital in Africa for six weeks with burns to his left arm, leg and stomach. He returned to active service and his unit in Ortona, Rome and Appledorn, Holland. They hauled food to starving people in Utrecht and after the war ended, hauled rations from Hanover to Oldenburg. Richard was discharged in Winnipeg on August 9, 1946. ULLBERG, Eskil A. WWII Eskil was born in Erickson, Manitoba in 1925. He joined the 1st Canadian Paratrooper Battalion in Winnipeg in 1943 and trained at Shilo before leaving for overseas in 1944. During the big drop over the Rhine Valley in 1944, a part of the battalion was required to go in on foot and Eskil was one of them. Eskil served in France, Holland and Germany. His brother, Elden, also served in the war but they didn’t see each other until they re-connected when they returned home to Erickson. Eskil married Dorothy Burkett in 1949, had two children, and purchased a home farm at Erickson through the VLA. He sold it to Elden in 1963 and moved to Saskatoon where he still resides. Eskil has been a member of Nutana Legion Branch 362 for eighteen years.
