213 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SWAN, Edward “Ed” WWII Ed was born on December 30, 1910 and he lived and worked on the family farm in the Lily District, near Souris, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Army in 1944, trained in Manitoba at Fort Osborne, Camp Shilo and Brandon, and then joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He also later served with the Calgary Highlanders. Lance Corporal Swan was wounded in action and hospitalized in Holland. After his discharge on April 19, 1946, Ed returned to Souris where he was employed with the Canadian Pacific Railway until he retired at age 65. With his wife, Pearl Watson, he raised two children and was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for fifty-seven years. Ed died in 1994. TARRANT, Daniel Roy “Dan” SPECIAL DUTY AREA & PEACETIME Dan was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 30, 1986. He grew up in Pine Falls and enlisted into the Canadian Armed Forces in Winnipeg on June 24, 2003 as a reservist. After four years of training throughout western Canada and an additional nine-month posting to Shilo, Manitoba for mission specific training, Dan was deployed to Afghanistan in early 2008 for a total of 8 months. This included duties such as convoy escorts and entry control point 3, which is the main entry control point for all coalition and local national personnel. Corporal Tarrant was returned to Canada and currently remains in the Canadian Forces. He has also served in France. Dan was awarded the General Campaign Star-International Security Assistance Force Medal for his service in Afghanistan. THIBAULT (nee BEKKER), Connie PEACETIME Connie was born in Denmark in 1940 and immigrated with her family to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in 1952. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1958, went through basic training at Station St. Jean, Quebec and was posted to Station Falconbridge, Ontario where she worked in the office as a clerk typist. She was transferred to Station Cold Lake, Alberta in 1960 where she stayed until her release. She then went back to Station Falconbridge and was immediately hired as a stenographer by the CTSO because of her training in service routine. She worked as a civil servant on the base until she got married and started a family. She has been a member of Leaf Rapids Legion Branch 251 for nineteen years. TAYLOR, Gerald A. WWII Gerald was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served in Canada during World War II. No additional information is available.
