He joined the Army and served in Southern England and France before returning to England and then proceeding to Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10. William died in 2000. SOMERS, William Robert WWII William was born in Carman, Manitoba on September 19, 1926. He enlisted with the Army and served in Canada during World War II. William had been a member of Kenora Legion Branch 12 for fifty years prior to his passing away in 1995. STEBBE, Lawrence E. WWII Lawrence was born in Beauséjour, Manitoba in 1923. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers in September 1939 and was attached to the Regimental Signals Corps. He served in Jamaica from June 1940 to July 1941 and was deployed on October 25, 1941from Vancouver to Hong Kong, arriving mid-November. The Japanese invasion on December 8, 1941 resulted in the surrender of the British colony on December 25th. For nearly four years, POWs were starved, beaten and forced into slave labour. Lawrence worked in the Yokohama shipyard smelters, Sendai coal mines and, with only a pick, shovel and bucket, helped expand the Kai Tak Airport runway. He was liberated in 1945. These Canadians suffered one of the highest casualty rates of any Canadian theatre of action in WWII. In 2002, Lawrence was presented with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for significant contribution to Canada and community. He has been a member of St. James Legion Branch 4 for forty years. STAMMEN, Isadore L. WWI Isadore was born in Chickasaw, Ohio, USA on August 26, 1896. He joined the Army and served in the Siberian Campaign. Isadore was a member of Lawrence Legion Branch 87 before he passed away in 1972.
