He was discharged in Winnipeg in January 1946 after having served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Western Europe. John passed away in 1978. ZLOTY, Stephen WWII Stephen was born on Cape Breton Island in 1911 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in Canada, Britain and the High Seas. He passed away in 2002 and had been a member of the Ukrainian Canadian Veterans’ Branch #141 of The Royal Canadian Legion for fifty-five years. ZROBOK, Nestor (Casey) WWII Nestor was born in Kenora, Ontario in 1920 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in Port Arthur, Ontario. He was serving on HMCS Charlottetown when it was torpedoed and sunk near Cap Chat, QC on September 11, 1942 by the German U-boat, U-517. The Captain and eight crew members went down with the ship but Nestor was one of the fortunate survivors. He then served on HMCS Provider, patrolling the waters off Hamilton, Bermuda until the end of hostilities. Casey passed away in 2001 and had been a member of the Kenora Branch #12 of The Royal Canadian Legion for forty-five years. ZROBACK, Nicholas WWII Nicholas was born in Kenora, Ontario in 1914 and joined the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry on January 11, 1940. He served in England and Sicily in 1943 and on October 22, 1944, “D” Company, of which he was Platoon Commander, launched an attack at the Savio River in Northern Italy, reaching their objective on the far side of the river. The enemy counter attack was relentless and the platoon had no choice but to surrender to the enemy. He was imprisoned at Stalag 7B in Moosburg, Germany until the end of the war. Nicholas was mentioned in “Dispatches”, published in the London Gazette in 1943. He died in 1995 and was a member of RCL Kenora Branch #12 for forty-five years.
