209 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca TRIPP, William Lorne WWII William was born in Ninga, Manitoba in 1912 and joined the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, serving in Canada, England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He was wounded and after recovering, was transferred to the Argyle and Sutherland Regiment where he was the chaplain’s driver. William passed away in 1990 and was a member of the Boissevain Branch #10 of The Royal Canadian Legion for twenty-five years. TUFTS, Laverne Glenn WWII Laverne was born in Fairfax, Manitoba in 1922 and joined the Canadian Army in 1941 and trained at Camp Borden. After joining the Lord Strathcona Horse Regiment in England in 1943, he was sent to Algiers and to Philipville on the North Africa coast and then to Naples and Ortona, Italy. Laverne was wounded in the back and shoulders from shrapnel and still had some sixty-four years later. From there, they worked up to Ravenna and then moved to Leghorn for loading on Tank Landing Craft and sent to Marseille, France and to Belgium and Holland by April. Laverne was a driver in the scout troop attached to the tank squadron. He returned to Canada for his discharge in 1946. URIE, Harry R. WWI Harry was born in Deloraine, Manitoba in 1890 and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers, serving in France. In 1917, he was awarded the Military Cross with the citation: “He saved four lives with great risk to his own.” He was discharged in 1918 with the rank of Major. Harry passed away in 1973. TURCOTTE, Donald J. SPECIAL AREA DUTY & PEACETIME Donald was born in Victoria Beach, Manitoba in 1939. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1956, served two years with the Army Cadet Corps in Pine Falls, MB, trained in Cornwallis, NS then served on HMCS Cayuga, HMCS Ontario and the minesweeper HMCS Cowichan. Released from the Navy, Don joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1961, trained in St-Jean, QC and served in Moose Jaw, Penhold, Winnipeg, Ramore, Cold Lake, Petawawa, Chatham, Lahr in Germany and with the United Nations Relief Force in Peru. He retired at Cold Lake, Alberta in June of 1993. His grandfather, Daniel (WWI) and his three uncles, Ralph, Albert and Abel (WWII) preceded Donald in the Canadian Forces.
