207 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca THORLACIUS, Lawrence T. WWII Lawrence was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1921. He enlisted with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in May 1942 and served in England and Northwest Europe as a sniper. His unit, serving in Germany and Holland, was at one point caught behind enemy lines and it took Lawrence and his buddies four days to crawl back to the safety of the Allied lines. Wounded in 1945, he was discharged and all through his life, never talked about his war years. He had been a Life Member of the Ashern Branch #57 of The Royal Canadian Legion when he passed away in 2006. TODD, Norbert J. WWII Norbert was born in Hamiota, Manitoba in 1922. He joined the Army on January 30, 1941 with the # 1 Platoon where he received special training to get ready for D-Day. On June 6, he cleared the beach of mines, beach obstacles and sea gates. He went through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and back to Holland at the end of the war. Norbert came back to Canada in late 1945 and was discharged on December 13, 1945. He’s been a member of the Portage la Prairie Branch #65 of The Royal Canadian Legion for thirty years. TOWNSEND, Charles R. (Rusty) WWII Charles was born in 1920 and joined the 8th Reconnaissance Regiment, 14th Canadian Hussars, 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, serving in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Germany. He received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Rusty passed away in 2009. TOOTH, James Arthur WWII James was born in Oakville, Ontario in 1924 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in October of 1942. He graduated as a service policeman and sailed for England early in 1944 with 18,000 troops on board. He ended up in Calcutta then Burma where he flew supplies to British troops deep in the jungle. In June of 1946, he flew a DC3 home to Winnipeg where he received an honourable discharge. James had been a member of the Portage la Prairie Branch #65 of The Royal Canadian Legion for fifteen years when he passed away in 2007.
