201 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca STOWE, Norma K. WWII Norma was born in Miniota, Manitoba in 1915. She won the gold medal in nursing studies at Brandon General Hospital in 1938 and worked for three years at the TB Sanatorium at Ninette, MB. She then joined the Canadian Army and was seconded to the South African Military Nursing Service, arriving in Potchefstroom, South Africa in early 1942. At the end of 1943, she was selected for service in the Middle East and went to Cairo where she met her husband-to-be, Don Nicolson. They were married in April 1944 and Norma returned to Canada later that year as a civilian. Norma passed away in October 1997 in Moorhead, MN, USA. SULKERS, Herman Cornelius WWII Herman was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1920. He joined HMCS Athabaskan, served in Canada, England and the High Seas and spent one year in a POW Camp. Herman passed away in 2000 and was a member of the Fort Garry Branch #90 for twenty years and the Chilliwack Branch #84 for twenty-five years. SVENDSEN, Mogens B. SPECIAL AREA DUTY Mogens was born in Denmark in 1933 and joined the Danish Army, 2nd Field Regiment, 22nd Unit/Battery, serving in Denmark. He’s been a member of RCL Burntwood Branch #244 for thirty-one years, the Fort Garry Branch #90 for seven years and the Charleswood Branch #100 for one year of The Royal Canadian Legion. SUTTON, Kenneth C. WWII Kenneth was born in Roland, Manitoba in 1914. He joined the Navy, served in Canada (St. Lawrence) and was a member of the Rockwood Army and Navy in Winnipeg from 1945-1946 to 1996. He passed away in 1996 and had been a member of the Osborne Branch #97 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
