199 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca STEWART, Keith M. WWII Keith was born in Pilot Mound, Manitoba in 1911. In 1939, he joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers and took his basic training at the Fort Osborne Barracks along with eleven other men from his home town. In 1940, he sailed to Bermuda and Jamaica to provide garrison duty, returning to Canada in 1941. He then sailed to Hong Kong where he fought in the battle of Hong Kong, becoming a POW from December 1941 to September 1945. Back in Canada, his occupation was farming. He was also President of RCL Pilot Mound Branch #62 in 1946. Keith passed away in 1963 and is buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in Pilot Mound. STORKSON, Albert M. WWII Albert was born in Bergland, Ontario on September 25, 1918 to Carl and Cecilia Storkson. He worked on the farm until he joined the Canadian Army at Port Arthur, ON on February 1, 1942 at age of twenty-four. He took his basic and advanced training at Winnipeg and Camp Shilo, MB and was a transport driver with the 41st Canadian General Transport Company, with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, serving almost four years in Canada, England, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Albert was discharged on October 30, 1945 in Winnipeg, MB and returned to his home town and worked again on his parent’s farm, logging camps and road construction. He passed away on November 8, 1975 at fiftyeight. STOWE, Edwin John WWII Edwin was born in Miniota, Manitoba in 1917. He enlisted in the # 10 District Depot (CA) (RCA) Canadian Army at Winnipeg, MB on May 20, 1941, as a driver/mechanic with the rank of Gunner. He trained at CFB Petawawa from June 11, 1941 until he sailed from Halifax, NS for Liverpool, England on November 9, 1941. Records show Edwin left England on November 8, 1943, probably for Italy, then went to France on February 26, 1945. He also served in Belgium and Germany and was honourably discharged on December 11, 1945 in Winnipeg, MB. Edwin passed away in 1998 and had been a member of RCL Miniota Branch #66 for sixteen years. STOWE, Charles L. KOREA Charles was born in Miniota, Manitoba on June 17, 1927 to John and Mabel Stowe. His older sister and two older brothers enlisted when WWII broke out and were sent overseas but Charles stayed home to help with the farm. After the war, he joined the Army in Edmonton, AB then was sent to Petawawa, ON for training and for a Non Commissioned Officer course. On August 13, 1952, Charlie left Vancouver for Korea, arriving there a month later. As a Private in # 10 Platoon, D Company, 1 Royal Canadian Regiment, he was sent to Hill 355 “Little Gibraltar” where he lost his life on October 13, 1952. Charles is buried at the United Nations Cemetery overlooking the city of Pusan, Korea.
