223 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca TRODD, William S. POLICE William was born in Orillia, Ontario, in 1927. He joined the Ontario Provincial Police Force and served in Ontario. He received the Federal Police Exemplary Service Medal and the Long Service Good Conduct Ontario Medal, and has been a member of Kenora Branch #12 of The Royal Canadian Legion for seventeen years. TURNER, Howard F. WWII Howard was born in Lauder, Manitoba, in 1920. He joined the 4th Division Royal Canadian Artillery and served in Holland, France, Belgium and Germany. He has been a member of Hartney Branch #26 of The Royal Canadian Legion for thirtysix years. TURRILL, Austin H. WWII Austin was born in Cartwright, Manitoba, the Mylor District in 1923, and worked on a farm in the Neelin Valley until he joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles RCIC. He was with the Canadian Forces in the invasion on Normandy and was wounded twice. While in hospital for the second time, he died of pneumonia at age 21 on Saturday, November 18, 1944. Austin is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, United Kingdom. He received the War Medal 1939-1945, the Star OVS Medal and the France/Germany Defence Medal. TURNER, Morgan J. WWII Morgan, son of the late William and Mavis Turner, was born in Holmfield, Manitoba, in 1924, and received his education at Lake Lorne, Cartwright, and Provincial Normal School in Winnipeg. After training for one year in Toronto, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force Precision Squadron in 1943, and was stationed in Toronto and Hamilton and later on to Penhold, Alberta, where he became a wireless operator. The favorite song of Penhold was “Don’t Fence Me In,” and Morgan never forgot that song. He and his chums sang it at Bayside. Morgan often spoke about the day that they were lined up and had to shovel coal in railway cars… he came up in the line and was told to step back because he was too short. He was discharged in 1945 and came home to farm with his father. In 1991, he retired to Killarney and is now a resident at Bayside. Morgan enjoys the activities and is always ready for a game of cribbage. He has been a member of Killarney Branch #25 of The Royal Canadian Legion for sixty-three years.
