213 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SOUTHWORTH, Edwin WWI Edwin was born in Ilford, Essex, England, in 1889. He came to Canada in 1905 as a farm labourer. Ted joined the 184th Overseas Battalion in March 1916, and trained at Camp Hughes and shipped to England in November 1916, and was immediately taken on strength by the 8th Battalion, Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He was wounded twice at Vimy Ridge and on August 9, 1918, at Amiens with a gunshot to the head. Following numerous pioneering plastic surgeries, Ted returned to Canada in 1919, and was discharged in 1920 as Lance Corporal. He was a Legion member from 1926-1961, first with Morden Branch #11 as President, and later with Deer Lodge Branch #56. He and his wife, Gladys Andrew, farmed near Darlingford and retired to Morden in 1936, and finally moved to Winnipeg in the 1950s to be near Deer Lodge Veteran’s Hospital, where Ted passed away in 1961. They had two sons and two daughters. SPEIR, Robert J. M. SPECIAL AREA DUTY & PEACETIME Robert was born in Northallerton, United Kingdom, in 1938. He joined the 1st Battalion Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, serving in the UK and Aden. He received the General Service Medal. STANCHUK, Harry WWII Harry was born in Glenella, Manitoba, in 1921. He enlisted in Winnipeg in December 1942 with the 58 Coast Battalion, serving in Canada. He was discharged in Winnipeg in November 1945 and passed away in 1997. He had been a member of Russell Branch #159 of The Royal Canadian Legion. SPENCER, Russell WWI Russell was born in Hartney, Manitoba, in 1888. He joined the 222nd Battalion and to the 19th Reserve and then to the 15th Reserve Band, serving as a Bandsman in Canada and England. He was a Charter Member of Hartney Branch #26 of The Royal Canadian Legion. Russell passed away in 1966.
