He joined the Hartney Platoon, 222nd Battalion and then the 44th Battalion and fought at the battles of Vimy, Lens and Passchendaele. SELF, John R. “Jack” WWII Jack was born in Marchwell, SK, in 1922. He enlisted in July 1941 with the RCE serving in Canada. He was discharged in July 1946, and passed away in 1999. Jack was a member of Russell Branch #159 of The Royal Canadian Legion. SEPKE, Rienhard “Roy” WWII Roy was born in Manitoba on February 10, 1914. He joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles (Little Black Devils) arriving in Liverpool in 1940, but later based in the south of England near Horsham. He took part in the raid on Dieppe in 1942 and also took part in the invasion on D-Day. The Royal Winnipeg Rifles landed on Juno Beach on June 6, 1944, at a place in Normandy called Courseuilles. He drove a Bren Gun Carrier with a flame-thrower. Roy was involved in battles at Caen and Carpiquet airfields (Normandy) and continued to near the Rhine, where he was injured; he lost an eye, received multiple shrapnel wounds and damaged tendons in one hand. He was invalided out in 1945 after several months in hospital. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the France/Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Bar, the Defence Medal and a British Medal. SELLERS, R. “Dick” WWI Dick was born in England. He joined the 10th Battalion then the 22nd Battalion serving in Festubert as Co. Sergeant-Major.
