LEST WE FORGET 95 DANIELS, Bill Andrew WWII Bill was born in Balcarres, Saskatchewan on January 8, 1920. He enlisted in the Regina Rifle Regiment on May 21, 1941, completed basic training, and left Regina on July 7, 1941. He arrived at the Debert Army Training Centre in Nova Scotia for field training on July 12, 1941. He left Halifax Harbour as part of the 7th Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, on August 8, 1941, and arrived at Greenock, Scotland on September 1, 1941. Bill and the rest of the Rifles were selected as one of the first infantry battalions to land on Juno Beach as part of the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. When they landed on June 6, 1944, they took heavy fire and lost 108 riflemen that first day. Bill is buried in the Beny-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery in Normandy, France. The inscription on his headstone reads: “Bill Andrew Daniels – L28053 Rifleman Regina Rifle Regiment – Our Beloved Son Lovingly Remembered by Mom, Dad, Brothers and Sisters – Son of Angus and Helen Daniels of Balcarres, Saskatchewan.” Daniels Lake, located a short distance northeast of Lake Athabasca, Saskatchewan, is named after Bill. Bill had three brothers serving with him during World War II: Riflemen Joseph, Edward, and Pte. Alex J. Daniels. DAVIES, Leonard Owen WWII Leonard was born in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, in 1912. He joined the South Saskatchewan Regiment (SSR) and served in England and France. He was killed in action on August 19, 1942. He was involved in the Dieppe Raid and was last seen volunteering to push off a reserve craft. Leonard is buried in Belgium. DARBYSHIRE, Edgar WWI Edgar was born in Winwick, England, in 1897. He joined the First Troop “A” Squadron Queen’s Boys in 1917 and saw action in France and Germany. In 1921, he came to Ontario and married Nina Wells and went to Ridgedale in 1925 and raised six children and farmed until 1942 then moved to British Columbia. Edgar passed away on March 9, 1988, in Salmon Arm, British Columbia and was buried with full Legion Honours.
