LEST WE FORGET 63 BARLOW, Jack WWII Jack was born in Balington, England in 1905. He came to Canada at the age of 26 and joined the Canadian Army, serving in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. In Holland, he guarded the POWs until the war was over and later joined to fight the Japanese and then came back to Canada and was discharged in 1945. He received the War Medal 1939-1945, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and France and Germany Star. Jack passed away in 1974. BAYNE, Robert Sedgwick WWI Robert was born on March 21, 1885, in Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia, to Reverend Ernest Samuel and Isabel (Munro) Bayne. Robert was the eldest of the family with one brother and two sisters. He came west and was working as an accountant for the Northern Crown Bank in Saltcoats, Saskatchewan when he enlisted in Regina on March 20, 1916, with the 195th Battalion. He and his brother were on the 195th Battalion Nominal Roll when it sailed from Halifax aboard the Empress of Britain on October 31, 1916. He went to France with the 5th Battalion on May 24, 1917. While he was overseas, both his parents passed away and he had $15 off each monthly wage go to his next-of-kin, his sister Mary Jean Bayne of Winnipeg, Manitoba. On July 29, 1918, near Arras, “This soldier, with his platoon, was proceeding from the support area to the front line trenches, when a shell exploded close to them. Private Bayne was hit in the head and left breast by pieces of the shell and instantly killed.” Robert Bayne is buried at Duisans British Cemetery and is remembered on the Sask Virtual War Memorial and also the Saltcoats Memorial. BARLOW, Ralph WWI Ralph was born in Balington, England in 1891. He came to Canada in 1912 and joined the Canadian Army in 1914 in Souris, Manitoba, and served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe and came back to Canada in 1919. In 1939, he was in poor health. Ralph received several War Medals and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He passed away in 1949.
