SARCHUK, Orest WWII Orest Sarchuk was born on August 10, 1922, to James and Dora Sarchuk in the Sokal District northwest of Wakaw. He was raised on the farm with ten siblings and after completing part of grade 9 at the age of 16, Orest ventured out to work. He worked at various jobs including painting, shoemaking and two years of mechanics in Prince Albert. In the early 1940’s, Orest joined his siblings in Ontario and was working as a cook at the Abitibi Lumber Company in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Sault Ste. Marie is where he enlisted. The story goes that prior to him leaving for Ontario he must have been talking about enlisting. To discourage him, his mother had challenged him to an arm wrestling match and if she won he wouldn’t go to war. She did win the match but the obligation to sign up was too great. In his documentation, he stated that he knew he would eventually be called up. He enlisted on June 12, 1942 with #2 District Depot Geneal Service R Wing #4 COY, was transferred to the Queen’s Own Rifles, Borden Ontario on October 22, 1942, and embarked to the United Kingdom with 3C CIRU (Canadian Infantry Reinforcement Unit) on December 13, 1942. He disembarked on June 6, 1944 in France, D-Day COY C (Rifleman) and on September 30, 1944, he received shrapnel wounds to the chest. In France and the UK, he spent six weeks in hospital and four weeks in Casualty Clearing Unit. His field service was from February 11, 1945 to November 6, 1945. Orest received the Clasp to the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Defence Medal, France and Germany Star, War Medal 1939-1945 and 1939-1945 Star. He was discharged with the rank of Corporal on February 1, 1946. Orest returned to Saskatchewan, never married and spent the remainder of his life in Prince Albert driving cab for a living. Orest passed away on July 13, 1982, at the age of 59. He is buried in the Cemetery of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Sokol District near Wakaw, Saskatchewan. He was survived by a daughter.
