LEST WE FORGET 285 PETZEL, Oscar Paul WWII Oscar was born in Alameda, Saskatchewan, on June 5, 1914. He married Dorothy Hoop on August 17, 1940 and joined the Army 2nd CAB on June 25, 1942, serving in Canada, England and Continental Europe. He was discharged on March 5, 1946. His regiment was one that landed on the Normandy shore on D-Day. He received the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. They moved to Alameda in 1950, he being a mechanic by trade. Oscar joined The Royal Canadian Legion Alameda Branch 267 in 1953 and was a very active member for The Legion and community. He passed away on June 5, 1985. PFEIL, Roman WWII Roman was born in Bruno, Saskatchewan on November 4, 1922. He attended the Kildrum country school south of Bruno, and worked on the family farm until the war. He joined the Army and served as a Private with the Regina Rifles in Germany, England and the Aleutian Islands during World War II. His brother, Jack, also enlisted. After his discharge, Roman became a carpenter and moved to Humboldt where he and his wife Elizabeth raised their family of six children. Roman was very active with the Humboldt Legion over the years, eventually serving as President. In 1978, Roman and Elizabeth moved to Saskatoon where he passed away on August 3, 1983. PFEIL, Jacob John “Jack” WWII Jack was born on June 1, 1920, in Bruno, Saskatchewan. He attended the Kildrum county school, south of Bruno, and helped on the family farm growing up. Jack and his brother, Roman, both enlisted in the Army, Jack serving as a Private in Germany with the Regina Rifles during World War II. He married Agnes Bulatowa, whom he fell in love with and helped escape Soviet agents who were sent to hunt her down. On July 27, 1947, Jack dove into the South Saskatchewan river and died a hero while trying to save his friend and his friend’s child. All three perished.
