LEST WE FORGET 267 NEUMIER, Lawrence WWII Lawrence was born in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, on August 8, 1917. He joined the RCA (Gunner) on November 29, 1942, serving in Canada and the Aleutian Islands and was discharged on March 14, 1946. After he returned to the farm, he married Bernice in 1944 and raised a family of seven and farmed until his retirement in 1979. He loved rodeos, horses, playing cards, camping, fishing and a good joke. Lawrence passed away on February 7, 1996. NEWSTEAD, Melvin WWII Melvin was born in 1915 at Balcarres and grew up on the farm. He enlisted in the RCA in 1942 and after being discharged he came to Arborfield in 1946 and worked for Clarence (Slim) Petrie and built a house on his brother Les’s homestead. Mel applied for Veterans’ Land Act land and on October 22, 1946, he married Irene Boisjolie and moved the house to their land. They raised three children: Diane, David and Russell. He joined the Arborfield Legion and Irene joined the Legion Auxiliary. Mel passed away suddenly in 1968 and Irene and the boys moved to Oliver. Diane and family live in Toronto. Irene passed away on December 16, 1998 and is buried at Balcarres, Saskatchewan. NEWSTEAD, Gordon WWII Gordon was born in 1918 at Balcarres and grew up on the family farm. He joined the RCA Saskatchewan Horse Regiment in 1942, and in 1944 he married Dorothy in Surrey, England, while he was serving with the Tank Corps. In 1946, Dorothy came to Canada with infant son, Wayne, and Gordon arrived three weeks later on the King George. They resided at Abernethy, Arborfield, before moving to Carrot River in 1953 with Wayne, Brent and Maureen. Gordon farmed and also worked for the Saskatchewan Timber Board. He passed away suddenly in 1973. Dorothy remained on the farm until 1998 when she became a resident in a Special Care Home in Carrot River. She passed away in 2002.
