LEST WE FORGET 265 NELMS, Edward James WWII Edward, son of Ernest and Elisa Nelms, was born in Kincardine, Ontario, on August 18, 1920. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and trained at various bases in Saskatchewan and Manitoba and left for overseas on September 27, 1941 for more training in England and Scotland. He was killed on June 15, 1942, at the age of 22, and was with the #19 Operational Training Unit flying a Whitney aircraft carrying practice bombs when it crashed in heavy fog into a hilltop in Morayshire, Scotland. Nelms Lake in northern Saskatchewan is named in his memory. Edward had married Sylvia Smart of Vandura in 1940 and had a son, James, born on June 15, 1941. NESS, Julian Bernard WWII Julian was born in Barnsville, Minnesota, USA, on August 8, 1912. He enlisted in the Army on October 9, 1942, training as a winch operator-expert carbine and then winch operator instructor serving in the southern Philippines. He received the American Theatre Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal as well as the good conduct and Victory Medals. He was discharged in January 1946 and was a member of the South Saskatchewan Branch 306 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 16 years until his death on July 11, 1979. NELSON, Thomas Harvey WWII Thomas was born in Watson, Saskatchewan, on August 25, 1915. He moved to Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, as a young boy where he lived with his aunt and uncle on their dairy farm. In 1941, he married Annette Giasson and on August 15, 1942, he enlisted in Regina in the RCASC and completed his basic training. He advanced at A20 CASCTC at Red Deer, Alberta, as a qualified motor mechanic and driver and embarked overseas on December 27, 1943 as reinforcement for the RCASC and then went to Italy on February 17, 1944 with the 41st Canadian General Transport as a Bren Gunner and served in Italy, Africa and England. After his discharge, he returned to Shaunavon, where he was employed by the Saskatchewan Coop Creamery and later took up farming until his death in October 1979.
