LEST WE FORGET 237 McDONALD, Norman WWII Norman was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, in 1920 to Ruth and Dan McDonald who was a CPR Conductor. Norman started school in Regina and finished at Moosedale. He enlisted with the 2nd Canadian Signal Corps on February 1, 1942 and served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, and was discharged on January 11, 1946. He married Margaret Hall in 1947 and they moved to their homestead in the Moosedale area and raised four children. Norman passed away on February 9, 1987, and Margaret still lives in Carrot River. McKAY, Alex WWI Alex was born on November 2, 1873, in Wick, Caithness, Scotland, to Kenneth Bain and Christina (McKay) Bain. He was the youngest of seven “Bain” children with four brothers and two sisters. He enlisted in Arcola, Saskatchewan on August 10, 1915 and stated he was 41 years old and working as a farm labourer. Family records state that he previously served for eight years in the British Army. He arrived in England aboard the Lapland and was with the 3rd Battalion, B Company. He was sent to France on June 17, 1916. Alex was wounded on April 10, 1917 at Vimy Ridge with a gunshot wound to the back and spent time in Etaples Hospital and convalesced at Merryflatts War Hospital. His next-of-kin was his brother, Peter Bain, of Gosse Isle, Manitoba. He returned to France with the 46th Battalion on March 29, 1918. He received a Good Conduct Badge on June 10, 1918. On November 1, 1918, “during the advance towards Valenciennes and while crossing the Sunken Road in the village of Aulnoy, he was hit in the heart and instantly killed by an enemy machine gun bullet”. Alex is buried at Aulnoy Communal Cemetery in Nord, France and his name is also on the Saskatchewan Virtual War Memorial. McDONALD, Ronald WWII Ronald was born at Humbolt, Saskatchewan, on January 18, 1917 and later moved to Saskatoon, where he took his schooling and moved to Connell Creek with his parents in 1931. He enlisted in the RCASC, 45th Canadian Army Dispatch Rider on July 11, 1941 and served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany and was discharged in 1946. He lived in Arborfield and married Letitia Greenshields, a nurse, in 1948. He received the Veterans’ Land in the Huntdale District and moved there. Ron passed away on June 12, 1990 and Letitia is also deceased.
