LEST WE FORGET 77 ATCHISON, Alexander WWI Alexander Atchison was born on November 15, 1883, in Kelso, Scotland. He emigrated to Canada where he first applied for a homestead on September 28, 1906. Alexander enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Saskatoon on December 8, 1915 with the 96th Battalion. His brother Thomas J. Aitchison of Macrorie was listed as his next of kin. Alexander was single, 32, and living in Macrorie at the time. While serving in France with the 15th Battalion at Canal du Nord, he suffered a deep transverse gunshot wound to his left leg on September 27, 1918. The 15th Battalion had been ordered to cross the canal in pursuit of the German Army. Once across and into the city of Cambrai, bitter street-bystreet fighting occurred. Success came at a high cost, with 153 casualties, including Corporal Alexander Atchison. He was hospitalized for 105 days. By the time he recovered, the armistice had been signed. Altogether he served his country from December 1915 until March 24, 1919. Back in Canada, he married Ethel Gertrude Hall who had emigrated to Canada from England in 1911. He made a second application for a homestead on September 10, 1919. He and Ethel were living in Macrorie when the 1921 Census took place. By 1931, they had two daughters, Betty and Ethel. The family moved to British Columbia in 1947. Ethel passed away on March 26, 1963, at the age of 76. Alex Aitchison died on March 12, 1966, at the age of 82. He is buried in the Veterans Cemetery in Victoria, BC. ATKINSON, Marie WWI Marie was born in Hamar, Norway on February 23, 1892. She enlisted in the British Expeditionary Force’s Nursing Service on June 8, 1917 and served in England and France with #22 (Harvard) General Hospital. Marie was discharged on January 8, 1919 after which she farmed, was a housewife, and did many hours of volunteer nursing when called upon. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Meadow Lake Legion Branch 76 and Saskatoon Legion Branch 63. Marie passed away on January 13, 1980.
