LEST WE FORGET 71 ARTHUR, John Alexander WWI John was born on January 12, 1886, the eldest of seven sons, to Samuel and Martha (Bingham) Arthur in Almonte (Lanark County), Ontario.While travelling on a settlers’ train to the Elim district (near Rocanville, Saskatchewan), John contracted typhoid fever and spent six weeks recovering in Moosomin Hospital. He was a carpenter by trade working in Wawota when he enlisted in the Army on April 21, 1916, in Regina to serve during World War I. He sailed from Halifax to England aboard the Empress of Britain on November 1, 1916. He served with the 5th and 15th Reserves and with the 195th Battalion in France on April 26, 1917. John was hospitalized in December 1917 for 24 days at Southport Infirmary suffering from shell gas bronchitis and spent the first 35 days of 1918 in Convalescent Hospital for Canadian soldiers. He was killed in action on September 1, 1918, during heavy machine gun fire on the Drocourt-Quéant line during the Battle of Arras as part of the Hundred Days Offensive. Private Arthur is buried at Upton Wood Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France. He is also remembered on the Rocanville Cenotaph. ASHLEY, Harold WWII Harold was born in 1909 in Lincoln, England. He served during the Second World War in England, Italy and Holland with the Saskatoon Light Infantry of the Canadian Army. He was a member of the TVS Legion Branch 78 for 51 years. He passed away in 1996. ASHDOWN, Kenneth Raymond WWII Kenneth was born in Melfort, Saskatchewan in 1923. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on May 18, 1943 at HMCS Unicorn in Saskatoon and was at HMCS Cornwallis from July 11. Kenneth served as Stoker 1 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and on the high seas on HMCS Beaver, HMCS Stadacona and HMCS Peregrine. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. Kenneth was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Melfort Branch 30 before he passed away in 2005.
