LEST WE FORGET 69 ARNOTT, Russell WWI Russell was born on March 31, 1899, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The family moved back to Canada in 1906. During World War I, he enlisted in the 152nd Battalion in Weyburn, SK. He was then transferred to the 5th Battalion (Western Cavalry) once they landed in England. He was wounded just after Vimy Ridge at the battle of Arleux. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Ceylon Branch 46. Russell passed away on April 1, 1971, in Ceylon, Saskatchewan. ARTHUR, Andrew Burns “Andy” WWI Andy was born on October 23, 1893, in Almonte, Ontario, the sixth of seven sons born to Samuel and Martha (Bingham) Arthur. He came west to the Elim district, Rocanville with his family in 1906. He contracted typhoid fever on the settler train and spent six weeks in Moosomin Hospital. Andy farmed with his father and brothers until he enlisted in the Army with the 79th Battalion in Brandon in 1915. He sailed from Halifax aboard the RMS Lapland on April 24, 1916. He was drafted into the 52nd Battalion and spent five months in Canada, 28 months in France, and nine months in England. Private Arthur was hospitalized for laryngitis, diphtheria in April 1917, and a gunshot wound to the right hand in August 1918. When he returned home at the end of June 1919, he purchased land and farmed with his father and two brothers, and they also ran a threshing outfit. Andy was one of the first members to join the Great War Veterans in Rocanville on November 28, 1919. He married Laura Blair in 1928 and the couple had three children. Andy was widowed in 1938 when his youngest son was not even a month old. Andy was known for his ability to recite poems and for many years, he recited “In Flanders Fields” at the Remembrance Day services. In 1948, he married Anne Marie Petracek and they later retired to Rocanville. They remained active in the Legion and Legion Auxiliary. Andy passed away on July 6, 1968, after a short illness and he is buried at Webster Cemetery in Rocanville.
