LEST WE FORGET 59 ALLEN, Sydney WWII Sydney was born on May 23, 1915, in Rosewood, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army in 1940 and was assigned to the Special Wireless Section Type “B”, Royal Canadian Signals as a driver, where he attained the rank of Lance Corporal. His unit crossed over by ship to England and from there went to Europe including Holland and Belgium. He demobilized in 1945, married and settled in the Abernethy District. He has been a Member of the Abernethy Branch #26 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 62 years. Sydney passed away on February 4, 2009. ALMAAS, Peter Sverre WWI &WWII Peter Sverre Almaas, who served in both World War I and World War II, was born in Trondheim, Norway on February 18, 1894. He arrived in Canada aboard the Ausonia on September 3, 1911, with his older brother Alf (age 19). The brothers were heading to Outlook, Saskatchewan. When he enlisted at Portage la Prairie on April 12, 1917, at the age of 23, he identified Outlook as his address. He trained at Camp Hughes. Peter served with the 107th Battalion (known as the Timberwolf Battalion) in France, seeing action at both the Somme and Passchendaele. He suffered a gas attack in 1918 that resulted in life-long chest problems. Altogether, he served two years overseas, receiving his discharge on May 17, 1919. Peter Almaas also participated in World War II when he joined the Canadian Army in 1939, serving overseas with the Saskatoon Light Infantry. He was in London during the famous blitz and in France during the D-Day invasion in June 1944. He and his wife Martha Christine were married in 1925. They had one daughter (Johanna) and two sons (Ole and Gordon). The family farmed in the Macrorie area until moving to Saskatoon in 1939. Both Peter and Martha were active in the Royal Canadian Legion. Martha passed away on March 30, 1963. Peter was living at Porteous Lodge in Saskatoon when he passed away at the age of 85 on July 15, 1980. He is buried in Saskatoon’s Hillcrest Gardens.
