LEST WE FORGET 323 SMITH, Cecil Ernest WWII Cecil Ernest Smith was born in Wabigoon, Ontario on April 28, 1898. His parents were John (1874-1929) and Minnie Cassady (1872-1938) Smith. The 1916 Census shows Cecil, age 18, living with his parents and six siblings in Broderick. He enlisted with the Vikings of Canada, 197th Battalion, in Outlook on May 26, 1916. He was an 18-year-old student in Saskatoon at the time. He was declared medically fit in 1916, the physician declaring that he could not “detect any reason why [Cecil Smith] could not serve.” In a strange turn of events, after an adenoid operation, his breathing was severely affected and he was discharged from the army. He served from May 25, 1916 until February 1, 1917. Cecil Smith lived in Winnipeg in the 1930’s. It is not known when he moved to BC. Cecil Ernest Smith passed away in Vernon, BC, on November 27, 1970, at the age of 72. He is buried in the Vernon Cemetery. SOMMER, Charles M. WWII Charles was born in Watson, Saskatchewan, on August 11, 1923. He joined the Regina Rifles, Glengarry Highlanders on August 11, 1943 and served in Canada, England, Belgium, Holland and Germany, and was discharged on July 30, 1946. He had been a member of the Watson Branch 272 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 9 years before he passed away on March 22, 1994. SMITH, Charles Henry WWII Charles was born in England on March 30, 1907. He joined the Alberta Calgary Highlanders, serving in Canada and England. He passed away on October 23, 1984.
