LEST WE FORGET 309 SARETSKY, Leo WWII Leo Saretsky enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943. His rank was Ordinary Seaman, he was trained as a telegraphist. His job was to send and receive wireless messages using morse code. Leo was stationed on HMCS Trentonian K368 when it was torpedoed and sunk on February 22, 1945, in the English Channel. SCHAPPERT, Lloyd WWII Lloyd was born in Marchwell, Saskatchewan, in 1921. He joined the 9th Field Ambulance on August 14, 1942 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy (September 1943-March 1945), France, Germany (March 1945-July 1945), and the Occupation Army until May 1946. Lloyd was part of the liberation of Holland in 1945 and returned to Canada. He married Albertha in 1948, who he met there, and they returned to Marchwell to farm on land bought with the Veterans’ Land Act and raised a family of eight and had seven foster children staying with them. Lloyd loved curling and always lent a helping hand. He taught his children morals, values and the love and trust of God. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-1945, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, and the 1939-1945 Star. Lloyd passed away on November 13, 1999. SAXBY, Reg WWII Reg and his brother, Jim, came to the Rivers End District to file for homestead for their mother and two sisters in 1933. He joined the Saskatoon Light Infantry in September 1939 as a dispatch rider, serving overseas, and was discharged in 1945. He passed away in October 1978.
