LEST WE FORGET 307 SANGSTER, John Sim “Jack” WWII John was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, on January 6, 1907. He was attached as an observer to the 1st British Army (586) Field Coy (RE) in North Africa from September 19, 1939 to December 7, 1945 and received MID as a result of his report. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, Central Mediterranean area and North Africa. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Italy Star, Africa Star, CE Medal and Clasp, and War Medal 1939-1945. Upon his discharge, he entered the U of S and graduated with a BA in medical laboratory technology, which he practiced until retiring. He was actively involved in the community until his passing on April 23, 2001, at the age of 94. He had been a member of the Moosomin Branch 81 of The Royal Canadian Legion for over 50 years. SARCHUK, Orest WWII Orest was born in Wakaw, Saskatchewan on August 10, 1922, to James and Dora Sarchuk. He grew up and attended school in Sokal, SK. His mother challenged him to an arm wrestle. If she won, he would not enlist as she did not want him to go. She won, but he enlisted anyway. He enlisted in the Army on June 12, 1942, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He transferred to the Q.O.R. in October 1942 and embarked to the United Kingdom on December 13, 1943, with 3CCIRU. He disembarked on June 6, 1944, in France on D-Day as a Rifleman. Orest was hospitalized on September 1, 1944, due to a shrapnel wound on the chest. He deplaned on February 11, 1945, in Northwest Europe with the Q.O.R. He did field service from March 15, 1945, to November 6, 1945. He was discharged on February 1, 1946, at the releasing of troops at the end of the war. Orest passed away on July 13, 1982. SANTER, Richard George “Dick” WWII Dick was born in Welwyn, Saskatchewan, in 1918. He enlisted in the South Saskatchewan Regiment on April 9, 1942, serving in Canada, England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and was discharged on January 5, 1946. He married Mable Blight and they had three children. In around 1952, they moved to the Alameda area to farm and joined the Alameda Legion Branch 267 in January 1953. He passed away on May 1, 1976.
