LEST WE FORGET 287 REINSON, Martin WWII Martin was born in Melville, Saskatchewan, on November 21, 1918. He joined the 27th Battery, 1st Anti Tank Regimental RCA in June 1942, serving in England, Sicily, Italy, France, and the Netherlands. He received his discharge in February 1946. Martin was wounded in Italy in 1944 and returned to active duty. He had been a member of the Robert C. Combe VC Branch 61 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 34 years before he passed away on November 5, 2008. RETZER, Walter Paul WWII Walter was born in Bulyea, Saskatchewan, in 1923. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1942, at the age of nineteen. He trained in Canada until May 1943, when he was sent to England. He continued training there as a navigator and his first operational sortie was on April 4, 1944, with the 400 Squadron. By September 1944, he was a navigator with the 418 Squadron, which flew the Mosquito aircraft. He flew twelve intruder sorties and three bombing missions with 418 Squadron. An intruder mission was when the aircraft went out at night alone into enemy airspace to look for enemy aircraft to shoot down. Walter was killed on January 13, 1945, along with three other airmen when their plane crashed in England. Walter is buried at Chester (Blacon) Cemetery in Chester, United Kingdom. RELLAND, Peter WWII Peter was born on August 17, 1921 at Duck Lake and grew up on a farm north of Eldersley. In 1938, the family of eight children moved with their parents to Carrot River, settling east of town where they built a sawmill. Peter enlisted in January 1940 in the RCNV and married Leontine Malfair in 1942. He served as a radio operator in the Atlantic North Sea and Mediterranean and was discharged on September 10, 1945. Peter received a lease of two quarters of land in the Connell Creek District and farmed and also ran the tower while Leontine taught school and raised nine boys. They acquired more land near Carrot River, moved there and built a bigger home. Peter passed away on November 9, 1996.
