LEST WE FORGET 283 PUMFREY, Wallace Elwood WWII Wallace Elwood Pumfrey was born at Hanley, Saskatchewan on July 25, 1915. His parents were Walter and Gertrude (Hunsicker) Pumfrey. He enlisted with the Canadian Navy and travelled by train to Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, for basic training. However, before his training was completed, the war was over. The family received letters from Wallace describing his experiences with the navy and stating how much he missed everyone. Prior to his enlistment, he married Julia Isabel Strand of Outlook in July 1943. They had four daughters (Joan, Doris, Norma and Lois) and one son (Harry). Harry was a long-time resident and businessman in Outlook. In 1970, Isabel and Wallace moved to Cranbrook, BC. Wallace Elwood Pumfrey passed away at the age of 64 in Saskatoon on Thursday, April 10, 1980. He is buried in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Saskatoon. Isabel passed away in Outlook Union Hospital on Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at the age of 95. She is buried beside her husband in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. PYLYPUK, Steve WWII Steve was born on August 24, 1920, and raised on the family homestead south of Wynyard, Saskatchewan where he attended the Round Hills School. At the age of fifteen, he went to work on a large mixed farm in the Kamanatha district south-east of Seamans. In 1942, Steve enlisted in the Canadian Army, West Coast Defence with the Royal Canadian Artillery. He received his basic training in Regina, then transferred to Calgary to finish training at Currie Barracks, from there to RCA Delbert, Nova Scotia to wait for deployment overseas. He was then transferred back to Calgary where he worked in the Machine Shop. In 1946, he and his wife Louise returned to Kamanatha resuming a position on the Silver Crown Farm. Steve started Steve Pylypuk Construction in 1961 in Raymore. A couple of churches and many homes exhibit his carpentry skills. In 1994, they purchased a condo in Regina where they enjoyed each other’s companionship until Louise’s passing in 2013. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Semans Branch 108. Steve passed away on February 26, 2019, at the age of 98. PYLYPUK (DRISCOLL), Louise Ella WWII Louise was born in Ponteix, Saskatchewan on February 8, 1920, to Charles and Ada Driscoll. She grew up on a farm near Gouverneur, SK where she also attended school. On April 17, 1943, Louise enlisted in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in Regina. She took her basic training in Vermillion, Alberta and was then posted to Currie Barracks in Calgary, later becoming chief pastry cook at number 5 kitchen. Louise met Steve, a member of the Royal Canadian Artillery, while stationed in Calgary. The two were married on May 4, 1945, and their first home was in the Kamanatha district near Seamans, SK. They had three sons, Percy, Wayne, and Dean. In 1962, the family moved to Raymore and Louise opened a beauty shop in their home. In 1983, she retired her scissors and closed up the shop. The Pylypuks moved to their condo in Regina in 1994. Louise passed away on February 26, 2013.
