LEST WE FORGET 281 PIPPINGER, George Edward “Ed” WWII Ed was born on October 1, 1905, in Cavendish, Idaho. He moved with his family to the Bestville District of Saskatchewan, west of Hazlet in 1911. He married Lila Wells in 1934 and they raised a family of four daughters. He joined the Canadian Army on July 1, 1941 and served in Canada, Britain and Europe until his discharge on January 10, 1946. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 43 years before he passed away in 1988. POTIE, Etienne WWII Etienne was born on August 17, 1919, in Arborfield, Saskatchewan. He enlisted with the Army Regiment D, Maisonneuve Coy as a Runner on April 16, 1942. He was wounded in France and served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany until his discharge on January 13, 1946. He moved to Arborfield in 1968 and continued to farm. Etienne passed away on August 22, 1997. POLLEY, Joyce Margret Joyce was born in Chadwell Heath, Essex on February 16, 1925, the second daughter of Rose and Henry Polley. She finished schooling in 1939 and went to work at a paper factory which later became a munitions factory. When she was old enough, she joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service and was stationed in Chatham, Kent working in gunnery control and radar. She met William (Bill) Jebson and they married on June 2, 1945. Joyce went back to work and in 1946 she sailed to Canada on the Aquitania along with other war brides. She arrived in Halifax and travelled to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan where her husband William met her and they travelled by horse and buggy to the farm in Shellbrook, SK. Times were hard, they broke land with horses, picked tree roots, and eventually planted grain and hay. They had a large garden as they had four children: Rosemary, Roy, Gary and Allan. Joyce did a lot of canning, they milked cows, and sold cream for money. They had a good life, and on March 19, 2007, Joyce had a stroke and passed away.
