LEST WE FORGET 245 McLELLAN, Robert Lloyd WWII Robert was born in Worman, Saskatchewan, in 1914. He was in the Armed Forces from 1942 to 1946, serving in England and France. When he returned home, he took over the operation of the home farm. He sold out in 1971 and returned to Welwyn. He was fond of sports and played on the Welwyn baseball team for many years and was an enthusiastic curler and enjoyed travelling and playing cards. He received the Campaign Ribbon. Robert passed away in 1992 and had been a member of the Welwyn Branch 112 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 46 years. McPHAIL, Hugh WWI Hugh was born on May 22, 1874, in Wooler, Ontario, to John and Jane McPhail. The family moved to Keys, Manitoba, and Hugh came to Runciman, Saskatchewan, in 1905 looking for land. He joined the Army and served overseas. His sister, Mildred, and six children came from Keys, Manitoba, to live on his farm. After the war was over, Hugh came home to his farm. Mildred had bought her own land. He married Mabel Robertson and they raised three daughters. Hugh passed away on November 8, 1951. McMANUS, John Senior WWII Private John Senior McManus was born on November 9, 1894, in Cypress River, Manitoba. His parents were James Alfred and Elizabeth (Shaw) McManus. John was the third son in a family of seven children. The McManus family homesteaded south of Glenside in 1907. He was farming near Glenside when he enlisted in Moose Jaw on August 3, 1915, at the age of 20. His father was farming near Dunblane at the time. John was attached to the 3rd Battalion Canadian Pioneers. The battalion took part in trench warfare on the Western Front in both France and Belgium. From England, McManus’s battalion embarked for France on March 10, 1916. Fifty-three days later, John Senior McManus was killed in action on May 2, 1916. He is buried in Maple Copse Cemetery near West-Vlaandern, Belgium. He was 21. The inscription on his gravestone reads: “Their glory shall not be blotted out.”
