LEST WE FORGET 235 MacGILLIVRAY, Mildred WWII Mildred was born in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan in 1921. She joined the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada. After her discharge, she became a teacher, married and had three children. Mildred was a member of Quill Lake Legion Branch 37 for a year. She lived in Saskatoon. Mildred passed away on August 15, 2022. McDONALD, Alexander Edward WWI Alexander was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, on June 7, 1889, and immigrated to Saskatoon, SK, in 1912 to work as a linotype operator on the “Daily Star” newspaper. He enlisted with the 5th (Western Calvary) Battalion as a driver on August 15, 1914, and served in Canada, England and France. He was discharged on May 9, 1919, and passed away in Saskatoon on July 6, 1933. MACHNAIK, Walter M. WWII Walter was born in Dysart, Saskatchewan, in 1920. He saw active duty with the PAV Calgary Highlanders in Canada, England, France, Belgium and Holland. He was wounded twice and spent several months in hospital in England. During one of his leaves, Walter went to Dundee, Scotland, where he married Jean Duffin. He returned home in January 1946, with Jean joining him in July of that year. They farmed in Dysart for twelve years and in 1959 they purchased in Welwyn and retired in 1976. Walter and Jean raised five children: Terry, June, Bob, Rick and Bill. He passed away on October 4, 2001. He received the 19391945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the Holland Thank-You Medal. He was a member of the Welwyn Branch 112 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 47 years.
