LEST WE FORGET 181 GREEN, Robert Clark WWII Air Gunner Robert Clark Green of the RCAF was born in Asquith to Robert J. and Ella Mae Green on July 11, 1923. The family of five moved to Elbow in 1934 where the father was a CPR station agent. Robert’s sister Kathlyn Elizabeth was a WREN in World War II. Robert was studying accounting at the University of Saskatchewan when he enlisted in the RCAF on February 5, 1943. He enjoyed sports, especially hockey, tennis, bowling and baseball. His commanding officer described him as “above average, cooperative, reliable and proficient at his trade.” He went overseas in May 1944. Sergeant Green died on August 23, 1944, when his Wellington Hercules bomber crashed at Norley Farm near Ely, Cambridgeshire on a night training flight. Only two of the seven-man crew survived. Approximately 50 minutes into the flight, at 14,000 feet the engines inexplicably cut out, re-started and cut out again. The aircraft went into an uncontrolled dive. Due to the exceptionally high speed of the descent, the aircraft disintegrated. One of the engines broke off, and the starboard wing was torn off. Wreckage was strewn over a two-mile area. Robert Clark Green is buried at Brookwood Cemetery (RAC Regional Cemetery) in England. He was 21 at the time of his death. Chaplain Reverend O’Brian conducted the service with full military honours.
