LEST WE FORGET 165 FISH, Donald WWI Donald was born in London, Ontario in January 1897 and moved to the McTaggart, Saskatchewan area with his parents in 1904. In May 1916, he enlisted with the 152nd Battalion, “A” Company at Weyburn, SK and went to England in October 1916. He was sent to France in November and was wounded on July 27, 1918. From his many wounds, he carried a metal ball lodged in his spine, to his death. Lance Corporal Fish returned to Canada in March 1919 and was discharged on May 22, 1919. Donald married Elizabeth Bush in 1920 and they raised two sons and a daughter. He was a very active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 67 in Ogema, SK for over twenty years. He passed away in November 1972 and is buried in the Royal Oak Cemetery in Victoria, BC. FISHER, Robert Alfred WWI Robert’s Scottish parents, Joseph Alexander and Mary (McPherson) Fisher came west from Ontario and settled in the Hillburn District (near Rocanville) in 1884 farming NE 24-15-32. The Fisher family built a large stone house which still stands. Robert (Robbie) was born on March 31, 1886, and was the second oldest of seven children and received his elementary education at Hillburn School. Robbie married Catherine McKay of Winnipeg and farmed his homestead at Windthorst. Catherine passed away in 1916 giving birth to their daughter Margaret (Margi). Robbie moved to Winnipeg where he worked as an auto mechanic leaving his nineteen-monthold with his parents. He enlisted in the Army on January 20, 1917, in Winnipeg with the 52nd Battalion, Manitoba Regiment. He left Canada on March 26, 1917, aboard the Metagama. His Canadian Infantry Battalion arrived at Arras, France on November 9, 1917. Robbie was killed in action on August 28, 1918, near Vis-enArtois and he is buried at Windmill British Cemetery in France. A Memorial Cross was sent to his mother and his medals were given “in trust for the soldier’s daughter.” Robert is remembered on the Rocanville and Moosomin cenotaphs. FISHER, Alfred John WWI Alfred was born on November 13, 1882, in Peel, Wellington, Ontario to William and Mary (Gordon) Fisher. He was enrolled as a law student in Vancouver when he enlisted on May 6, 1916, in Vancouver. He left Halifax aboard the Cameronia on September 11, 1916, with the 62nd Battery/15th Overseas Brigade. He landed in France on August 26, 1917, and served in France for nine months and was promoted to Assistant Sergeant. He was commissioned to the RAF on May 10, 1918, in Witley, England and was discharged on October 25, 1918. He had married Christina Fisher by January 7, 1919. They had a daughter, Colleen, and farmed in Red Jacket, Saskatchewan. Alfred later was municipal secretary in Eston, Saskatchewan before retiring to Victoria. He died at Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver, BC on April 12, 1962, at the age of 79, and was buried at Garden Chapel, Ocean View, Burnaby, BC.
