LEST WE FORGET 137 CROSS, Geoffrey Harvey “Geoff” WWI Geoff was born on November 3, 1886, in Attleborough, Norfolk, England to Jeremiah Cross. He was married to Jane Ellen Cross, a nurse, and gave his address as Welwyn Saskatchewan when he enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg on November 20, 1916. He listed his occupation as farmer and butcher. Geoff was with the No. 1 CASC Training Depot and was sent to France from April 18, 1917, to May 3, 1919. His wife and two little girls, Avey and Jean, were in England during Geoff’s time overseas. He was discharged on July 10, 1919. The family returned to NW 5-16-30 in 1920 and the two girls attended Elim School near Rocanville/Welwyn. Geoff died on February 10, 1965, in the Deer Lodge Hospital in St. James, Manitoba and he is buried at Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg. CUDDINGTON, Arthur Herbert “Bert” WWI Bert was born on April 18 in 1884 or 1885 in Brighton, Sussex, England. His parents, James and Charlotte Amelia “Ruth” (Langley) Cuddington, had eleven children with Bert being the eighth child. His family immigrated to Canada in 1894 and his parents settled in Steelman, NWT. Bert married Ellen Mary (Nell) Moorcock at St. Mary’s Church in Brandon, Manitoba on July 23, 1910. They moved to Rocanville where Bert worked as a baker. He enlisted in the Army on April 18, 1916, in Kingston, Ontario and gave his current address as Rocanville, SK. He left Canada on April 28, 1916, aboard the SS Olympic. Bert was posted with the 3rd CDMT (Occupational Group) and served overseas for almost three years. He was sent to France on December 15, 1917. Bert was discharged on April 30, 1919. He and his family relocated to Bienfait where Bert and Nell raised three sons. They started an insurance business called “A. H. Cuddington and Sons” in Bienfait. He served as treasurer when the Bienfait Legion started in 1930. Bert passed away on January 30, 1961, and is buried in Bienfait. CROSWELL, Earnest Beecham (Ernest) WWI Ernest was born on January 26, 1895 (1896) in Ahmic Harbor, Parry Sound, Ontario. His parents were John and Susanna (Annie) (Hammond) Croswell. The family came to Yarbo, Saskatchewan in 1911 and Ernest took up farming. He gave his address as Stockholm, Saskatchewan when he enlisted in the Army with the 249th Battalion on March 2, 1917 (Stockholm). He had to travel to Moosomin for his enlistment medical. While training in Canada, Ernest had diphtheria from April 11, 1917, to May 5, 1917. He left Canada on February 18, 1918, aboard the Saxonia. Private Croswell was assigned to the 249th Battalion on arrival at Bramshott and he was assigned to the 28th Battalion on May 1, 1918, and arrived in France on May 11, 1918. After eleven months in France, he proceeded to England on April 11, 1919, and was discharged on June 2, 1919. Ernest married Doris Ellen Wilds (Esterhazy) in 1926 and they had three daughters, Lottie, Iris and Doris. Ernest died on December 25, 1954, at the age of 58, and is buried at Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Calgary.
