LEST WE FORGET 135 CRAGG, Bill WWII Bill was born in Ditton Park on October 23, 1921, to Wes and Mary. He joined the Army in 1943 at Brandon and took further training at Wainwright, Alberta, Vernon, British Columbia, Vancouver Island and Huntsville, Nova Scotia, and then went overseas to Great Britain, Europe and Holland. He was discharged in 1945 and took a course in welding and machine shop and ran a pool elevator at Anerly and sold Co-op Insurance. Bill married Joyce Crockett in 1951 and they raised four children: Wes, Myrna, Marilyn and Peggy. He passed away on January 29, 1995. CROFT, Ernest Sidney WWI Ernest was born on December 13, 1882, in Birmingham, England. His father was Joseph Croft of Smethwick, West Midlands, England. Ernest spent twelve years with the Royal Marines and after immigrating to Canada he was working at Fillmore. When he enlisted on January 11, 1916, in Regina with the 152nd Overseas Battalion, he was working as a waiter in Regina. He arrived in England aboard the Missanabie on October 13, 1916. Ernest was made Corporal with the 32nd Battalion in October 1916 and went to France with the 5th Battalion on November 27, 1916. Ernest “took part with his battalion in an attack on Vimy Ridge on the early morning of April 9, 1917, when he was wounded in both legs by machine gun fire. He was evacuated immediately but succumbed to his wounds later at No. 13 General Hospital Boulogne.” Ernest died on April 23, 1917, and is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas-deCalais, France. He is remembered on the Fillmore Memorial in Saskatchewan. CRAGG, David WWII David was born in 1920, son of Wes and Mary Cragg, and raised on the family farm south of Aylsham. He enlisted in 1940 and went overseas with the South Saskatchewan Regiment. He was wounded but returned to the front line and was discharged in 1945. He bought Lloyd Well’s homestead and in 1946, he got a Veteran’s lease and built on it. In 1950, Dave married Jean Barks and raised four children: Jim, Dave, Donna and Rosemary. He farmed and operated a sawmill for years. In 1973, he captained a fishing boat “Aggie May” on Lake Athabaska. Dave passed away on December 20, 1995.
