LEST WE FORGET 105 BROTMAN, Moses Harvey “Moe” WWI Moe was the fifth oldest of ten children born to Edel Joseph and Leah (Katz) Brotman at the Wapella Farm on August 25, 1891. His parents were Russian Jews who immigrated to Canada and ended up near Wapella, Saskatchewan where the Jewish Colonization Association helped immigrants adjust to homesteading. Moe’s father was later part of the Brotman (sometimes spelled Brothman) family liquor business in Winnipeg. Moe was a law student in Winnipeg when he enlisted in the Air Force on April 9, 1918, with the 1st Depot Battalion Manitoba Regiment. He joined the Royal Flying Corps, and those records can’t be accessed. After the war, Moe married Eva Ruth Goldbloom in 1921 and they had two children, Jordan and Eleanor. The family lived in Vancouver for nine years and Moe did a lot of business travelling as a salesman. Wherever they lived, Moe and Eva were an important part of the Jewish community.When Moe opened the U.S. market for Seagram’s Whiskey Company, the family relocated to the San Francisco area in 1935. When the U.S. drafted son Jordan in World War II, Moe also tried to sign up (1942) at the age of 51, but both were turned down. After living in Tokyo during the 1950’s, Moe and Eva returned to California. Moe passed away on March 11, 1966, in Sausalito, California. BROWN, Julius VIETNAMWAR Julius was born in South Carolina, USA in 1956. He entered the military in 1974 during the Vietnam War and served in the Pacific Theatre primarily in Korea and Japan with the Security Forces. He was also stationed at several US locations. He currently lives in Saskatchewan with his wife who is Canadian. BROWN (HEGGIE), Elizabeth M. WWII Elizabeth was born in 1916 on the family farm near Demaine, Saskatchewan. She went to school at Bernard and Lucky Lake School and took a secretarial course at Success Business College. Elizabeth enlisted in the RCAF in December 1942 and took her basic training in Toronto, Ontario. She was then posted to Ontario, Saskatchewan then to Alberta and Manitoba. Corporal Heggie was discharged in February 1946. That same year, Elizabeth married Bill Brown who passed away in September 1988. She lived in their home until she found that she could no longer look after the yard then moved to Lucky Lake for a while before moving back to Beechy to the Personal Care Home. Elizabeth’s last three months were spent in Kyle and Lucky Lake health centers. She was a member of Beechy Legion Branch 324 for 53 years before she passed away in 2014.
